Workplace collaboration has become increasingly focused on chat in the past couple of years, and Microsoft is jumping into the new space with both feet, launching a new product it calls Teams, a chat tool for Office 365.

From the videos here it seems it will have  threaded chats, Office document collaboration and multi-person video chat.

The cloud-based software will integrate Word, Excel, Powerpoint and more into collaborative workflows and team chat.

include Skype integration for voice and video conferences, customisable appearances, and the ability to link in notifications and updates from external sources such as Twitter. “You can really think of Microsoft Teams as a digital transformation of an open office environment,” said Microsoft Office exec Kirk Koenigsbauer

In addition to a desktop version, Microsoft Teams will be available on iOS, Android and Windows Phone devices.

It’s hard not to view Teams as yet another entry in a crowded collaboration market. But it packs in some thoughtful features that might tempt over users of other apps.

While general availability isn’t expected until the first quarter of 2017, Microsoft Teams is available in preview form to commercial customers with Office 365 Enterprise or Business plans. The early bird version is available in 181 countries and 18 languages already.
